The Wayanad District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), in association with the Tourism Department, is preparing to launch a nature cycling package for adventure tourists on the Pookode lakeshore to entice more tourists to the site, the second largest freshwater lake in the State.

The project would be launched on Friday. “Many a time the visitors spend their time only for boating on the lake and they would not get time to explore the lush green surroundings of the lake, which spreads over five hectares of land,” B. Anand, secretary, DTPC, wayanad, said.

“'Hence we are planning to provide a novel experience to the tourists under the project,” Mr. Anand said. The project also envisages minimising carbon footprint on the lakeshore, he said.

The tourists can ride and enjoy the 2-km stretch of the lake shore, for which the DTPC has built an 8-metre-wide interlock pavement at a cost of ₹50 lakh.

10 bicycles

The DTPC authorities have procured as many as 10 bicycles for the project and they would procure 15 more bicycles for the purpose by the end of March.

A sum of ₹50 would be charged a rider for 20-minute pedalling, including safety gears like helmet, Mr.Anand said.

A guided bicycle tour to connect major tourism destinations in the district is also on the anvil and it would be launched by the end of April, sources said.
