Customs officials are conducting a raid on the house of Akash Thillankeri, a close associate of Arjun Ayanki who was arrested in the Karipur gold-smuggling case, from Wednesday morning.

The raid at Akash’s house at Thillankeri in the district comes against the backdrop of his association with Arjun.

The inspection is being carried out by the officials from the Kannur Customs office after they reportedly received information that all arrested in the Karipur gold-smuggling case have links with Akash.

Ajmal, a native of South Panoor, who was arrested on Tuesday, has been found to have links with Akash. There are indications that Akash was also involved in smuggling of gold through the Kannur airport. Customs has now come to the conclusion that Akash is the real head of the gangs involved in gold smuggling.

Akash issued notice

Special Correspondent writes from Kochi: Akash, a ‘person of interest’ in the Karipur gold smuggling case, has been asked to appear before the Cochin Customs on Friday. Customs officials on Wednesday issued him a notice to be present before the Preventive wing of the agency.

Akash is an accused in the Shuhaib murder case.

Meanwhile, a trial court here remanded Ajmal to judicial custody for 14 days.
