The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] district committee has decided to move the Supreme Court after the High Court rejected the bail application of former secretary of the party’s district unit M.M. Mani on Thursday.
The decision was taken at a district committee meeting held at Rajakkad on Saturday night presided over by Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener Vaikom Viswan.
Party sources are tight-lipped over whether Mr. Mani would appear before the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy.SP) at Thodupuzha at 10 a.m. on Monday as per the second notice issued by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiring into political murders since the 1980s.
To consult lawyers
Mr. Mani had earlier said that he would take a decision on the matter after consulting lawyers on Sunday.
The case relates to his speech at Manakkad near Thodupuzha on May 25 when he had allegedly said that the party had prepared a list to eliminate its opponents, and three of them had been killed.
Mr. Mani has been charged under a non-bailable section of the Indian Penal Code for murder. A senior police officer and a SIT team member said adequate police personnel would be deployed at Thodupuzha. Party sources said the issue would be dealt with legally as all the cases referred to by Mr. Mani had been closed by court and the move to take up them now was politically motivated.
