: Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretariat member and senior party leader K.K. Chellappan died here on Monday. He was 81.

He breathed his last at the Government Taluk Hospital at Kayamkulam at 3.10 a.m. Mr. Chellappan had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital near Ettumanoor for a long time for age-related ailments.

Born in Vadakkethil house at Kandalloor, Kayamkulam, in 1933, Mr. Chellappan, or KKC as he was commonly referred to, joined the undivided Communist party by becoming a member of the Kayamkulam division committee in 1952. He went on to join the CPI(M) after the party split in 1964.

He was selected by the State committee as the secretary of the party’s Idukki district unit during its formation, a position which he held for 13 years. He is credited with having played a crucial role in building the party base in Idukki during the Emergency. Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has termed the death of Mr. Chellapan a heavy loss to the trade union movement.
