The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has abandoned its ideology and has degraded itself into merely a political entity, according to the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Polit Bureau member P.J. James.

He was inaugurating a democratic convention on ‘Criminalisation and Communalisation of Politics’ organised at the Kottayam Press Club hall on Saturday. Dr. James said that the CPI (M) has in recent times adopted a fascist line of functioning, wherein it has neglected its fundamental

ideology, formerly the driving force of the party, and has turned a blind eye towards the plight of the disadvantaged sections. The decision of the party to back Pranab Mukherjee as the Presidential candidate for certain gains that are merely political, has exposed the reluctance of the party’s central leadership in holding aloft the ideals.

According to him, the world was gradually becoming trapped in the clutches of capitalist forces. It is in this scenario that uprisings against capitalistic tendencies have sprung up in various places in recent times. Unfortunately, such movements have seldom attained its goal due to a lack of direction in their activities. The absence of certain forces, ideally the Left, which has the responsibility to lead such revolutions have not intervened in the required manner, thereby leading to the failure of such movements.

Dr. James also pointed out that most of the several discussions that have taken place in the State in the aftermath of the murder of (Revolutionary Marxist Party leader) T.P. Chandrasekharan has not ventured beyond the realm of politics. The issue of political violence has forced the CPI (M) to recede into a defensive mode. Moreover, the United Democratic Front (UDF) with the assistance of corporate media establishments have utilised the issue for political and other gains. However, the focus of the public has not been brought on the larger perspectives of such instances of intolerance.

Leaders from CPI (ML), Kerala Yukhtivadi Sangham, National Dalit Liberation Front, All India Revolutionary Women’s Organisation and Revolutionary Youth Federation of India participated in the programme.
