THRISSUR: Minister for Agriculture V.S. Sunil Kumar has said that convergence of activities by various research organisations and departments is essential for the development of the agriculture sector.

Speaking after inaugurating the monthly agro clinic and farm advisory programme of Kerala Agricultural University at Mannuthy on Saturday, the Minister said the farmer-scientist interface was a well-thought-out programme to link stakeholders for promotion of agriculture.

“The presence of farmers, extension officers, and experts on a common platform bonds the relationship to foster productivity and income. The warm response from the farming community and earnest efforts by KAU scientists and officials are positive signals,” he noted.

“This is a flagship programme, which soon can become a national model. Scheduling regular visits by such expert panels to major agricultural zones would also be a welcome step,” the Minister added.

In his presidential address, K. Rajan, MLA, highlighted the need for more such popular programmes so that no farmer felt that KAU was not accessible for them. “The feeling that KAU is supportive and responsive towards their needs would do a world of good for the farming community,” he said.

Agricultural Production Commissioner and Acting Vice-Chancellor Teeka Ram Meena, in his keynote address, said strengthening the bond between farmers and farm scientists was the need of the hour, and that the interface was a welcome step in that direction.

“Even while floating innovative ideas for doubling farmers’ income through enhanced productivity, we have to ensure that research is result-oriented. Farmers should also feel confident about research and researchers. The ultimate aim of all academic, research and extension activities is to partner with farmers for enhanced production. Consumerism should not impede agricultural progress,” he added.

Director of Research Dr. P. Indira Devi presented the expert panel recommendations. Principal Agricultural Officer Abdul Majeed explained the project. Agricultural Faculty Dean Dr. A. Anil Kumar, Director of Planning Dr. T. Pradeep Kumar and Communication Centre head Dr. Binoo P. Bony spoke.

Hundred-odd farmers presented their problems and obtained expert advice in the agro clinic programme conducted by KAU’s Communication Centre.
