Rahul Gandhi arrives in Kerala; to visit rain-hit areas

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived at Karipur airport on Sunday afternoon and proceeded to Kavalappara in Pothukal village near Nilambur, where more than 50 persons of 18 families are feared trapped under the mud and soil unleashed by a massive landslide on Thursday evening. A massive search is going on at Kavalappara.

Mr. Gandhi reached Pothukal at 4.45 p.m. and met the people displaced by the landslide and floods. He asked them details of their houses and their situation, and assured them all possible help.

After visiting Kavalappara, Mr. Gandhi is to proceed to Mampad, where he will visit a relief camp functioning at MES Mampad College. He is also to visit a camp at Kunduthodu near Mampad.

Mr. Gandhi will return to Malappuram Guest House, where he will hold a review meeting of the rescue activities with the district administration officials.

KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Ramesh Chennithala, District Congress Committee president V.V. Prakash, senior Congress leaders Aryadan Mohammed, K.C. Venugopal, E. Mohammed Kunhi, V.A. Kareem and Sakeer Pullara are accompanying Mr. Gandhi.
