The concept of social reforms in Kerala have been diluted, distorted and devalued of late, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat has said.

She was addressing a function at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi auditorium here on Friday after releasing the Malayalam translation of the book No free Left by Vijay Prasad. The translation of the book on future of the Indian Communism was done by A. Siyavuddin.

“In North India, social reforms are always connected with electoral politics. But in Kerala, reforms brought out by social reformers such as Sree Narayana Guru were inside the caste and between the castes. However, there has been attempt to dilute the social reforms in Kerala,” Ms. Karat noted.

“Many people are apprehensive about the future of the Left. But I have only one thing to tell them — there is no future without the Left. Neither Modi’s “Make in India” nor the Congress’ “Loot in India” can save the country. Only the people-centric policies of the Left can bring development in the country,” she said.

Expressing her happiness to see more than mandatory 50 per cent women representatives in the local bodies, Mr. Karat said it showed that the women would prove their calibre if they were given chances. In Tripura women constitute more than 57 per cent of the elected members, she said.

She released the book by handing over a copy to Mayor Ajitha Jayarajan, district panchayat president Shiela Vijayakumar, and Wadakkanchery municipal chairperson Sivapriya Santhosh.
