The budget proposal to induct CNG (compressed natural gas) buses into the KSRTC fleet in Kochi is expected to go a long way in ushering in a clean transport system in the State. The project, planned for introduction on a pilot basis, could be the harbinger of an environment-friendly transport mode.
Vehicles run on CNG are being operated successfully in New Delhi and several other cities in the country.
It was a Supreme Court order that forced the transport operators in the country’s capital to take to CNG, after pollution went beyond permissible levels.
Natural gas could be made available from the LNG terminal set up by Petronet LNG Limited at Puthuvype in Kochi. Several rounds of discussions have been conducted by the company with the KSRTC which had a proposal to switch over to CNG.
