Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday handed over a report to Governor P. Sathasivam highlighting the magnitude of the violence unleashed by protesters across the State following the entry of young women to the Sabarimala temple in the wake of the Supreme Court verdict allowing women of all age groups to the temple.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called on Governor P. Sathasivam at Raj Bhavan here. The meeting lasted half an hour. He assured the Governor that stringent action would be initiated against those involved in the violent incidents, irrespective of party affiliation. On January 3, the Governor had sought a report on law and order from the Chief Minister. Mr. Sathasivam had briefed Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh about the law and order in the State.
The report outlined a series of violent incidents triggered by Sangh Parivar organisations in different places and the attacks on over 30 women who attempted to visit the temple. It included the targeted attacks on mediapersons and police officers.
Life disrupted
The report said the orgy of violence during the hartals called by the protesters had disrupted life and left policemen, political leaders and innocent people injured. Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses, shops, offices and houses were damaged. As many as 1,137 cases had been registered. Of the 10,024 miscreants identified by the police, 9,193 belonged to the Sangh Parivar organisations. The report said the attacks on women devotees amounted to contempt of the Supreme Court order. The police had unearthed a conspiracy to create communal polarisation in the State.
Losses
The Chief Minister handed over CDs containing pictures of the violent incidents and details of the social media campaign to sow the deeds of communal hatred, along with figures of the loss of ₹2.32 crore due to the damage caused by protesters during the hartal on January 3.
