Says govt will ensure murder doesn’t lead to violence in Kannur

BJP State unit president Kummanam Rajasekharan would have to face legal action for his social media post with a video of CPI(M) supporters allegedly taking out a rally to celebrate the murder of an RSS worker at Payyanur, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the Assembly on Monday.

Replying to the notice for an adjournment motion on the fresh political violence in Kannur, he said the BJP leader should explain where the rally took place. Pointing out that the CPI(M) area committee had come out with a statement that it was not responsible for the murder, the Chief Minister said, “the video is misleading and provocative. Legal action will be initiated against Mr. Rajasekharan for spreading false reports, after examining the video.”

Terming the murder of Choorakad Biju as an isolated incident, he said the government would ensure that it did not escalate into another spiral of violence.

Mr. Vijayan said the government would intensify the efforts to ensure peace in Kannur.

Setback

Moving the resolution, K.C. Joseph said the planned murder had the potential to trigger a fresh round of political violence in Kannur, posing a setback to the ongoing peace efforts. He said the frequent transfer of police officers in Kannur exposed the sinister designs of the ruling party.

The Opposition staged a walkout after the Speaker refused permission for a discussion on the issue.
