CM to meet Manmohan today

December 03, 2013 02:42 am | Updated May 12, 2016 06:54 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday to seek modifications to the Kasturirangan panel report on the Western Ghats.

The Chief Minister, who left for New Delhi on Monday evening from Kochi, will also seek expedition of clearances for the Vizhinjam project. He will take up other demands of the State with the Prime Minister.

One of the important issues to be taken up by Mr. Chandy regarding the Kasturirangan report is the proper demarcation of the ecologically sensitive areas (ESAs) excluding populated areas.

Demarcation using remote sensing had resulted in villages such as Melukavu, Teekoy and Poonjar-Thekkekkara, with no forests but rubber plantations, getting listed as ESAs.

The State government wants this and errors in population estimates to be corrected.
