The Clean Kerala Company has collected over 400 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste from the flood-hit areas of Alappuzha district.

Officials said here on Monday that the waste collection drive would continue in the coming days.

“The Clean Kerala Company, in coordination with the Haritha Keralam and Suchitwa Mission, launched the waste collection drive two week ago. We have already completed collection from several panchayats. The process is going on in the rest of the local bodies and it will be completed soon,” said Pratheesh M.V., project executive, Clean Kerala Company.

The floods that wreaked havoc in Kuttanad and Chengannur have opened the floodgates of waste. Following the deluge, plastic, e-waste and other non-biodegradable waste have piled up in the flood-hit areas. Mattresses, cots, furniture, and electronic equipment, including refrigerators, TV and washing machines were discarded in huge numbers.

Volunteers under the aegis of the Haritha Keralam Mission are conducting house-to-house visits and collecting segregated waste at ward level. The collected wastes are then brought to a panchayat-level collection centre before handing them over to the Clean Kerala Company.

Kudumbashree workers, volunteers under the Haritha Keralam Mission and various voluntary organisations are taking part in the drive.

Recycling

Officials added that the collected waste would be recycled. Plastic would be shredded and used for construction of roads.
