Church row: protestors block State Highway

Members of the Malankara Orthodox Church belonging to parishes attached to the Thumpamon diocese blocked the Punalur-Muvattupuzha State Highway at Mylapra, near here, for nearly an hour on Saturday afternoon demanding immediate settlement of the row over the ownership of St. Paul's and St. Peter's Church at Kolencherry in Ernakulam district.

Fr. Titus George, secretary of the diocese; Fr. Varghese Mathew, Fr. K.G. Johnson, Prof. G. John, Prof. Babu Varghese, all managing committee members of the Church, led the blockade that began at 1 p.m.

Vehicular traffic on the State Highway was disrupted. The protest ended following the intervention of Metropolitan Kuriakose Mar Cleemis.

Letter to Chandy

Staff Reporter writes from Kollam:

Rajan Idiculla, general secretary of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee's Vichar Vibhag, has written to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to immediately implement the Supreme Court verdict on the church dispute and save the life of Malankara Metropolitan Baselios Mar Thoma Paulose-11 who is on a fast to assert the ownership over the church.

The metropolitan was demanding the implementation of the court order that was in favour of the Malankara Orthodox Church, Mr. Idiculla said.
