The State edition of the National Children’s Science Congress commenced on the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) campus here on Friday.

P.T.A. Rahim, MLA, opened the two-day event, in which 87 short-listed research papers by students from various parts of Kerala will be presented on the theme ‘Science, technology and innovation for a clean, green and healthy nation.’

Officials with the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), the organiser of the event, said 16 research papers selected from this two-day congress would be nominated to the National Children’s Science Congress to be hosted by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication in Bhubaneswar from December 27.

Launched in 1993

They said the science congress, launched in 1993, would offer a platform for children in the 10-17 age group to showcase their research skills, creativity and innovative ideas that could emerge as a scientific solution to societal problems.

Fostering talent

It was also aimed at fostering the talent of students from both the formal and informal schooling system. Project coordinators recalled that the previous editions of the congress had dealt with 13 themes, covering environment, biodiversity, food system, land resources, climate change, and energy resources.

The theme of the last year’s congress was ‘Science, technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development,’ they said.

On Saturday, M.K. Raghavan, MP, will open the valedictory session of the event.
