Charity rides on three wheels

October 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:49 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

Fifty-two autorickshaw drivers are bent on making a change in the lives of people.

The drivers will be friends in need to those who require help. The drivers, who take turns to operate at the Government TD Medical College at Vandanam here, have seen many a patient and their relatives crying for help. With a strong desire to do something for the helpless, they decided to join hands to contribute their might. A project titled Snehapoorvam Santhwanam was born thus. The project aims at supplying dialysis kits to those in dire need. Their limited resources will be pooled to make the project a reality, said Faizal Rasheed, a member of the group.

Dialysis kits are bought from outlets which are ready to be part of the humanitarian gesture. There is no organisation behind the move, asserts Mr. Rasheed. The group is also planning to provide free travel scheme to the cancer patients who want to consult doctors at the medical college frequently. To begin with, the scheme will be implemented in Ambalappuzha and Punnapra. Deserving patients will be given an identity card to prove their eligibility for free travel.

The group will soon launch a programme called Theruvoottu to provide food to destitute people and vagrants.
