Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Sunday criticised the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and issued an open challenge against its party state leadership to prove the allegations levelled against the United Democratic Front (UDF) on its role in the resignation of R. Selvaraj as member of the State Legislature.

“The CPI (M) must prove the veracity of the allegations made against the UDF and the State Government. Several methods that employ the benefits of technology could be used in strengthening such claims. Telephone records can also be scrutinised by the opposition. I challenge (CPI (M) state secretary) Pinarayi Vijayan and (Leader of the Opposition) V.S. Achuthanandan to present evidences that back their accusations,” he said.

Mr. Chandy also accused the CPI (M) of attempting to mask its failures by raising baseless allegations. “It has been 48 hours since R. Selvaraj had resigned as a legislator of the CPI(M). Has the party been able to respond to any of the charges levelled by Mr. Selvaraj? He has posed many critical questions to which the party has failed to find answers. Moreover, the resignation has had an adverse impact on the party. The allegations that have been raised by the party leadership are part of an attempt to mask its failures and divert the attention of the public from the actual issues. Such futile attempts will definitely be realised and understood by the common populace.”

Responding to whether Mr. Selvaraj would be welcomed to the UDF soon after completion of the upcoming Piravom by-election, Mr. Chandy replied, “he (Mr. Selvaraj), himself, has made it clear that he would not become part of the coalition. I have been able to understand that he has voiced certain reservations in joining the UDF.”
