Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary Kanam Rajendran has accused the Centre of weakening democracy and trying to divide people on caste and communal lines during the past four years.
Inaugurating a march and dharna organised by trade unions, youth, student and other feeder organisations of the CPI here on Wednesday as part of a nationwide protest, Mr. Rajendran said the government was trying to undermine the functioning of Parliament and Assembly, destabilise democratic institutions and upset the economy of the country. A united fight was imperative to stall such attempts of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he said. People of different sectors are joining hands against the NDA government that had failed to honour the commitments given to people during the past four years. Dalits and other backward classes, students, youth, farmers, women and those in the cultural realm were all united to fight the policies of the Centre, he said.
Those professing different political views had all united against the BJP and this showed a new direction in the nation’s politics. Before coming to power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had waxed eloquent about the problems of the common man, farmers and such others and four years later, he had flouted the rights of all such sections, Mr. Rajendran said.
The rate of non-performing assets in nationalised banks had risen considerably owing to huge amounts liberally given to corporate majors and now the Centre was getting ready to write off these loans, he said.
