The Pulikeezhu block panchayat launched a novel project, ‘Nirmalam Nirbhayam,’ aimed at ensuring safety of women and total sanitation in the block panchayat limits.
The block panchayat president, Satheesh Chathankary, told The Hindu that the project envisaged installation of CCTV cameras at select points identified by a joint team of police personnel, people’s representatives and panchayat officials in different parts of the panchayat limits.
Pulikeezhu is, perhaps, the first block panchayat in the State to implement such a women-safety and eco-friendly project with the co-operation of various grama panchayats and the police.
Mr Satheesh said the panchayat has already installed 19 CCTV cameras and installation of 25 more cameras was progressing. He said a total of 44 cameras would be installed in different parts of the block panchayat in the first phase.
A control room has been set up at the police station at Pulikeezhu for round-the-clock monitoring. The whole system is being installed by the Kerala State Industrial Enterprises (KSIE).
Mr Satheesh said the CCTV cameras would be of great help to prevent or reduce the growing excesses towards women and to take stern action against those who dump waste in public places and in water bodies.
The panchayat has also planned installation of solar lamps at all the camera points.
Order of Tribunal
The panchayat has launched the project on the basis of an order of the National Green Tribunal to use CCTV cameras to check dumping of waste in public places and water bodies, he said.
Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala will inaugurate the project on Saturday afternoon.
