A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team on Thursday carried out simultaneous searches on the Central University of Kerala (CUK) campuses here and the residences of senior varsity officials in the wake of allegations of financial irregularities against them.

The six-member CBI team, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy.SP) Ramadevan reached the CUK’s Periye campus in the morning and examined files. The CBI team carried out simultaneous searches at the house of University Joint Registrar S. Gopinath here and the residence of Assistant Registrar (Finance) K. Rajeevan at Vadakara.

The CBI team, from its Kochi wing, inspected files and records at the university’s Periye and Vidyanagar campuses here, he said.

The raid comes amid charges of financial irregularities in the temporary recruitment of security personnel, purchase of furniture, and discrepancies in paying rent for the campuses at Padannakkad and Vidyanagar.

Prof. Gopinath was accused of various irregularities while he was holding the charge of Registrar. He was divested of the charge recently.

FIR filed

Special Correspondent writes from Kochi

The CBI on Thursday filed an FIR before a CBI special court here against two persons in the case relating to corruption in outsourcing security services in the offices of the CUK.

University Assistant Registrar (Finance) K. Rajeevan and proprietor of the security agency R. Rajendran were arraigned as accused in the case.

The CBI alleged that the Finance Department of the university had been clearing the bills submitted by the security agency for the past few years without any verification. There was mismatch in the number of security personnel deployed at the university office in Thiruvananthapuram, guest house at Padannakkad, and the boys’ hostel.

In 2012, the security service was outsourced to Matha Security Agency on a one-year contract. The contract period of the security service was extended to the agency in 2013, 2014, and 2015 without issuing a fresh tender, the FIR alleged.
