The police registered cases against four suspected cow vigilantes for attacking the occupants of a house at Beripadavu, near Kumbla, on Monday.

The incident unfurled on Sunday evening when a pick-up van transporting a cow from Mangaluru was waylaid by a group of motorcycle-borne youths at Beripadavu. A youth, Abubacker Siddique, tried to take a video of the incident on his mobile phone. Upon seeing this, the motorcyclists barged into his house and attacked him and his parents causing minor injuries to them. They then destroyed Abubacker’s mobile phone.

Yet to be identified

The police have registered cases against the youths under provisions of Sections 294 (b) (utter obscene words in or near public place), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means ), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 447 (trespass) of the Indian Penal Code, Manjeswaram SI M.P. Shaji said. Sources at the Manjeswaram police station said the miscreants had not been identified.

DYFI activists staged a meet at Kumbla in protest against the attack on the family and sought the arrest of those involved.
