Car row: CPI(M) puts blame on local leaders

October 27, 2017 11:05 pm | Updated 11:05 pm IST - Kozhikode

The CPI(M)’s Kozhikode district committee has faulted the party’s local leadership for not exercising proper discretion in finding an alternative car for use by State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan during the stopover of his Janajagratha Yatra at Koduvally recently.

Absolving Mr. Balakrishnan of any indiscretion for using a luxury car owned by an allegedly tainted businessman, the district committee said on Wednesday that the rally reception committee at Koduvally should have exercised caution.

“The full responsibility is with the reception committee at Koduvally,” the party said adding “there is no point in blaming Mr. Balakrishnan or the LDF.”

It said the car supposed to have taken Mr. Balakrishnan into Koduvally developed a problem and hence the local leaders had to find another a car at the last minute. This car - owned by Faizal Karat - was not part of the rally. The committee accused its political opponents of whipping up an ‘unnecessary controversy’ over the car. This was because both the BJP and the IUML were unsettled by the huge reception given to the rally at Koduvally.

BJP leaders had raised the issue linking Faizal Karat to a gold smuggling incident at the Calicut airport.
