Apparel, home furnishing works by students on display

The TANTU Graduation Show at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) here has a static display of the thematic creative collections by the graduating students of the four-year bachelor programme in Textile Design (B.Des).

The students have done the apparel and home furnishing works as part of their graduation project.

Industry situation

The collections showcase application of academic inputs adapted for real-life industry situation. As many as 35 B.Des students presented their graduation works done in association with the industry. While some of the students worked and created home furnishing collections, others made apparel collections.

“All these works on display are the outcome of the work of the students as part of their graduation project,” said Srikanth Gella, Assistant Professor, NIFT, here. They had used the latest technologies, which include digital prints; embroideries; and surface design techniques, he said adding that they came off with their collections based on trend forecasts. The graduation project is an 18-week industry-based academic activity.

During this period, B.Des students develop collections of fabrics for apparel or home fashion on the specific brief given by the sponsoring company.

The graduation project of Sreeja Nair on display won the Most Creative Collection Prize and the Best Graduation Prize-II. One of her bedroom collections on display, she said, was for ‘in-betweeners,’ namely those who found it difficult to decide whether to choose designs that emphasised fun or serenity. Her second collection was an attempt to capture the essence with vintage motifs with contemporary touch, Ms. Nair, student from Palakkad, said.

Disha Bhanot, who won the Best Graduation Project, said that her first home furnishing collection titled Camp Nod was for kids as she used elements of camp, including bonfire signages, maps and adventure travel, among others. The second collection combined soft modern elements with vintage garden touches, Ms. Bhanot, hailing from New Delhi, said.

Kannur International Airport managing director G. Chandramouli inaugurated the exhibition. NIFT-Kannur Director Rajeev Panth and Joint Director G. Ramesh Babu were among those present at the function.

As many as 143 students from five graduating departments participated in the convocation ceremony held here on Wednesday evening. The ceremony was inaugurated by National Institute of Technology-Kozhikode Director G.R.C. Reddy. Handicraft Development Corporation Managing Director Karimpuzha Raman was the guest of honour.
