Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress are the same when it comes to corruption and they are together in passing various Bills in Parliament, Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat has said.

Ms. Karat was addressing an election campaign meeting of Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate Veena George at Elamannoor, near Konni, on Tuesday. Both these parties were trying to achieve their political ends by mixing politics with religion, she said.

She said the Narendra Modi government at the Centre had already destroyed the secular democratic credentials of the country. Ms. Karat alleged that the Union government had miserably failed to protect the right to equality enshrined in the Constitution. Instead, the country had been witnessing onslaught of the Constitution, she said.

Incidents of violence and assault in the name of religion and caste in India were on the rise and the country had witnessed as many as 3,000 violence during the past five years, she said.

Ms. Karat lauded the initiatives taken by the LDF government for empowerment, security and safety of women, overall development of the State and welfare of the poor and the less privileged.
