Proper biosecurity measures must be followed in flood-affected areas in the State, says B. Sunil, Professor, Department of Veterinary Public Health.

As floodwater has receded it is extremely important to clean up houses as quickly as possible. This will help take care of the occupants’ health and the safety of the building. “Floodwater not only damages buildings and furniture, but causes serious health issues through contamination from sewage and other pollutants. Since floodwater is highly contaminated, ensure that all porous building materials are are removed and discarded,” says Dr. Sunil.

Experts say a photograph of the house and damages should be taken before the clean-up, as proof of damages. If the building is covered by an insurance policy, the company should be contacted at the earliest. Public health impact after floods must be given utmost importance to avert the incidence of communicable diseases, says T.P. Sethumadhavan, former Director of Entrepreneurship, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University.

“Public health impact of floods includes damage to houses and displacement of people, which may lead to spread of infectious diseases.

This is mainly due to crowded living conditions and compromised personal hygiene.

Water sources can become contaminated with sewage or toxic chemicals. Solid waste collection and disposal can be derailed. In addition, flooding can result in increase in mosquito population, which again can result in diseases,” he said.
