Beef festival: probe into teacher’s Facebook post

October 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:50 am IST - Thrissur:

The Cochin Devaswom Board has ordered an inquiry against a teacher of the Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur, who allegedly put a Facebook post supporting the beef festival.

Beef festival conducted by the SFI students on the college campus had triggered a controversy after the college authorities suspended six students alleging that they violated the discipline of the college.

Cochin Devaswom president M.P. Bhaskaran Nair on Tuesday ordered an inquiry against Deepa Nishanth, an assistant professor of Malayalam in the college, citing that she had violated the college rules by putting up a Facebook post, allegedly criticising college rules.

“If the teacher is found guilty, stringent action will be taken against her,” said Mr. Nair. In her Facebook post, Ms. Nishant criticised the action of the college authorities against students. “The education institutions are not temples and they should not follow the religious rules of the temples,” she allegedly posted in the social media.

ABVP and Yuva Morcha activists marched to the Devaswom Board Office on Tuesday demanding action against Ms. Nishant. Other Sangh Parivar organisations too demanded her expulsion. Ms. Nishant said that people with vested interests were misinterpreting her comment.

The SFI students had conducted the beef festival on October 1 to protest against lynching of a man in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly eating beef. ABVP students opposed it and the festival ended up in a clash between the two unions.
