‘Ban on campus politics a challenge to democracy’

Speaker questions recent HC verdict

Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan has said that the interim verdict of the Kerala High Court banning campus politics is “a challenge to democracy and lacks sound reasoning”.

Speaking after inaugurating a seminar on democracy and distribution of land documents at Kokkalur near Balussery in Kozhikode district on Friday, Mr. Sreeramakrishnan said it seemed absurd when some people thought that they had the sole right to air their opinions and take a final decision on all things under the sun.

“This is unacceptable in a democratic set-up. The rightful authorities are the Assembly and the Parliament,” he said.

A Division Bench of the High Court had earlier observed that those indulging in political activities in educational institutions would make themselves liable to be expelled or rusticated.
