Ashram celebrates 175th birth anniversary of Sri Ramakrishna

The valedictory function of the year-long 175th birth anniversary celebrations of Sri Ramakrishna was held at the Sree Ramakrishna Ashram Temple hall at Thukalasserry near Thiruvalla on Sunday.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr Rama P. Venu, professor of Medicine at University of Illinois in Chicago in the United States, said the basics of Indian philosophy was in the Vedas that originated from the Lord Himself.

According to him, the Sri Ramakrishna cult has got strong moorings in the United States that houses as many as 14 Sree Ramakrishna Ashrams and Swami Vivekananda Vedanta Centres.

Inaugurating the function, Swami Samagrananda, senior monk, said there were many instances in the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna where young intellectuals of the time telling him their idea of God. It was the intellectual fashion of the period to show instances of various wonderful phenomena in nature, as proving the existence of a beneficent God of nature.

“The nature of God is impossible even to speculate and it is idle to split hair on the issue. All such philosophical speculations are like trying to ascertain the number of leaves and twigs in a mango orchard instead of plucking a ripe and juicy fruit and biting into it,’’ he said.

Welcoming the gathering, Swami Golokananda, Ashram president, said India’s twin ideals as taught in the Vedas and other scriptures have always been renunciation and service. While all members of society have to work to discharge their duties they should do it in a spirit of service to God in the form of the world and its living beings.

Renunciation is for those who have given up the world for God, and they do not make any claim on the world nor can the world claim anything from them, he said.

Swami Golokananda said the philosophy of the Vedanta was not anathema to the entire intellectual class, because it had the sanction of a parallel idealism in the West, and it yielded to discussions and debates.
