Appoint counsellors at sports hostels

May 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST

The death of a young athlete at the Water Sports Training Centre attached to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) at Alappuzha and three others battling for life are grim reminders the state of affairs prevailing in the sports hostel they were staying at. It is suspected that they consumed a poisonous fruit owing to some compelling reasons. Whatever may be the reasons, all is not well with this hostel and other sports hostels in Kerala.

Only a detailed probe will reveal the truth. Counsellors should be appointed at all the sports hostels to prepare the young trainees to face the realities of life.

Check corruption at local body

As Kannur Municipality is on the threshold of becoming a city Corporation, one important thing to weed out is corruption at all levels in the local body.

An electric crematorium built with crores of rupees a decade ago is now defunct. It has turned into a store house for the wood used for cremation. Another instance was the construction of a flyover in front of the Old Bus Stand at Rs.50 lakh. Two years later, it was demolished spending a similar amount. This only points to fact that things are not fine with the local body and indicates corruption at various levels.
