Leader of the Opposition V. S. Achuthanandan has accused Union Defence Minister A. K. Antony of being a ‘mauni baba’ maintaining silence over corruption in Defence deals and the Mullaperiyar dam issue.

Addressing a meet-the-press programme at the Ernakulam Press Club here on Wednesday, Mr. Achuthanandan alleged that Mr. Antony has mastered the art of remaining silent on critical occasions.

Blaming the Union Defence Minister for keeping mum over the Adarsh housing society scam, Mr. Achuthanandan said that Mr. Antony had also not reacted against corruption allegations in the purchase of aircraft from France for the Indian Air Force. The Defence Minister had also remained silent when the sea route was used for the terror attacks in Mumbai, he said

Mr. Achuthanandan alleged that Mr. Antony had also failed to protect the interests of Kerala in the Mullaperiyar dam issue by not speaking against the Union Government’s moves that aided the interests of Tamil Nadu. He said that the Union Ministers representing Kerala also refused to speak against the inter-linking of rivers.
