Another massive landslip near Adyanpara in the Chaliyar panchayat on Monday left the people in the district panicky. Water in the Kanhirapuzha, a major tributaryof the Chaliyar, rose within minutes of the landslip at Thenpara in the Pantheerayiram forest area.

Local people said the landslip occurred around 2 p.m. The swollen Kanhirapuzha began to change route at several places, including Mathilmoola Colony, which had been badly affected by the recent floods. Many houses at Namboorippotti Kalikkadavu were damaged in the flash floods.

Back to camps

A few families at Namboorippotti had returned to their houses from the relief camps when last week’s floods receded. However, Monday’s flash flood made them shift back to relief camps. Four more families were moved to the camps.

The staff at Adyanpara power station fled to safety upon hearing the loud noise of the landslip. Geologists had warned of fresh landslips at Meenmutty and Ottathani hills near Adyanpara. The entire area witnessed incessant rains since Monday morning. Six members of a family were buried alive and dozens of people displaced following landslips at Chettiyampara and Adyanpara on Wednesday. More landslips have been predicted in the Adyanpara and neighbouring hills. Landslips at Pantheerayiram hills deep inside the forest caused flooding in the Kuruvanpuzha, another tributary of the Chaliyar. People at Moolepadam, Idivenna, and Akampadam are living in fear.
