Abdullakutty set to join BJP

Meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah in Delhi

The political journey of A.P. Abdullakutty, two-term MP of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) before he joined the Congress, is all likely to take a saffron course as his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday triggered speculation that his expected move to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is impending.

Mr. Abdullakutty’s rumoured move to join the BJP in the wake of his Facebook post on May 28 singing paeans to Mr. Modi’s ‘statesmanship and development agenda’ and calling the Prime Minister a Gandhian is now seen as a foregone conclusion following his meeting with Mr. Modi in the latter’s office in Parliament at around noon on Monday.

Having been expelled from the Congress in the aftermath of his controversial Facebook post, Mr. Abdullakutty left enough hints that he was about to undergo yet another political metamorphosis. His recent Facebook post on June 21 announcing his participation in the International Yoga Day programme in Dubai repeated his encomium for the Prime Minister’s statesmanship.

“I met the Prime Minister and it was a good meeting in which he asked me to bravely step forward,” Mr. Abdullakutty told The Hindu over the phone. During the meeting Mr. Modi also said that his government had taken various policy measure that would bring development to all people, including the minority communities, he said. “Mr. Modi also expressed his concern that I had to face action from the CPI(M) and later the Congress for highlighting his development agenda,” he said.

Mr. Abdullakutty also met BJP president and Home Minister Amit Shah later on Monday. “Mr. Shah invited me to join the BJP,” he said. When asked if he had decided to join the BJP, he said that his meeting with Mr. Modi and Mr. Shah was a courtesy call.

The 52-year-old politician, who had begun his political career through student politics as an activist of the Student Federation of India, served in the Congress for a decade following his expulsion from the CPI(M) at the fag end of his second term as MP from the Kannur Lok Sabha constituency for praising the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s development model.

Mr. Abdullakutty had drawn the wrath of the Congress leadership in the State following his May 28 Facebook post in which he compared Mr. Modi with Mahatma Gandhi. He wrote: “Mahatma Gandhi asked public servants…when you formulate a policy remember the poorest man you have ever met in life…Mr. Modi accurately executed it [the Gandhian value].”
