A traditional stronghold of LDF

A traditional stronghold of Left Democratic Front (LDF), Nenmara offers very little hope for the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF). Skirmishes within the Congress over candidate selection have eclipsed the chances of the ruling front.

Political observers are keenly watching the performance of the BJP-BDJS combine in the constituency as it has already won massive influence across the border constituency.

The BJP had made impressive performances in the constituency in the last Lok Sabha elections and the recent local body elections. The BJP was able to get 24 of its candidates elected to different grama panchayats under the constituency. Community wise, it is a Ezhava stronghold.

Linguistic minorities also form a sizable portion. The constituency also has a sizeable tribal population.

The key electoral issues include land scams at Nelliampathy, widespread environmental degradation, crisis faced by the mango sector at Muthalamada and issues haunting vegetable cultivators at Vithinassery. Sand-mining mafias and their clout over political parties also form a major electoral issue.

A predominantly agricultural area with different climatic conditions, water scarcity is a major concern affecting the farming community.

As far as the LDF is concerned, it has tremendous faith in the traditional agricultural workers and their families who have always stood with the Communist parties. In Nelliampathy, a number of voters are north Indians in origin.
