it back in the classroom and weigh your career prospects without consulting career guides or experts but with the aid of a small board to the left of the blackboard. That’s what the Vocational Higher Secondary Education (VHSE) students can do now, thanks to the introduction of a novel 3X2 poly carbonate notice boards, imaginatively named career slates, in all 2,200 classrooms across the State.
“Higher secondary students in our State usually have no idea about potential higher education institutions or careers they can pursue. Career slates aim at filling that void,” K.P. Noufal, VHSE Director, told The Hindu .
The Department of VHSE now brings out 35 career slates with subject-specific content for each of its 35 courses.
The frequency of slates will be increased from the present twice in a month to once a week in two months from now.
Each career slate will be split into four parts. The first part will feature an event or personality-specific article, which will be common for all classes while there will be segments introducing higher educational institutes of repute nationally and internationally and organisations where students can aspire to pursue a career. Each slate will remain in the classroom till the next edition is published. A six-member editorial board with the VHSE Director as the chief editor will vet and approve the content of the slates.
“The subject experts will be changed every month to ensure that the content doesn’t become captive to the personality and knowledge level of any one person. We have already identified subject experts for the next three months,” said Mr. Noufal, who is confident that the initiative has captured the imagination of students and teachers alike going by the initial response.
