World Cancer Day observed with rally, flash mob in Kannur

World Cancer Day was observed by the Kannur-based Malabar Cancer Care Society (MCCS) in tune with this year’s theme of observance ‘I am...I will’ and a ‘Run for Cancer Care’ conducted here.

The programme was inaugurated by 80-year-old M. Narayanan, general convener of the survivors group functioning under the MCCS, who has been living a healthy life after cancer treatment 16 years ago. Representatives of various residents’ associations, clubs, members of the Friends of Cancer Care, members of the MCCS and students of nursing colleges of the Koyili Hospital and Dhanalakshmi Hospital participated in the run from Pallikkunnu to this town.

MCCS President D. Krishnanadha Pai presided over the meeting.

At Mattannur

The MCCS organised a rally at Mattannur in association with the Amma Palliative Care Unit, PRNSS College NSS unit and the JCI Pazhassi.

As part of the programme a flash mob was held at Thalassery by students of the BEMP Higher Secondary School, Government Brennan Training College , Government Girls HSS and Government College of Teacher Education.

The programme was organised jointly with the Thalassery branch of the Indian Medical Association.

A press release by the MCCS said that as part of the World Cancer Day activities, the MCCS in association with All India Radio, Kannur started a weekly cancer awareness programme that will be broadcast for next six months.

It said that the Sanjeevani Comprehensive Cancer Control project being implemented in Pallikkunnu , Puzhathi zones of the Kannur Corporation in association with the Corporation, Health Department in six stages since November 28 was completed on the World Cancer Day covering 17,000 households covering a population of 69,000.

The MCCS is planning to continue the World Cancer Day thrust activities more vigorously through its Breast Cancer Brigade project and Sanjeevani Comprehensive Cancer Control project activities during the days to come to contain cancer in the Malabar region.
