A Congress bastion for long

The Aluva Assembly segment has been a Congress bastion for long. K. Mohammadali of the United Democratic Front (UDF) had represented the constituency six times in a row beginning 1980. In 2006, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) succeeded in creating fissures in the Congress fort when its candidate A.M. Yousuf defeated Mr. Mohammadali by a margin of 4,366 votes.

The last delimitation altered the poll map of Aluva after the Eloor and Edayar industrial areas, Kadungallur grama panchayat, and Kalamassery municipality were delinked from it. Nedumbassery, Chengamanad, Sreemoolanagaram, and Kanjoor grama panchayats and the Aluva municipality were added to the constituency. Varapuzha panchayat, which was part of the constituency, got added to the Paravur Assembly segment.

The change in contours saw Aluva losing its industrial town status. The segment now consists of Aluva municipality, Chengamanad, Choornikara, Edathala, Kanjoor, Keezhmadu, Nedumbassery, and Sreemoolanagaram.

The Congress has fielded its sitting MLA Anwar Sadath, while V. Salim is the LDF candidate. Mr. Sadath defeated Mr. Yousuf of the LDF by an impressive margin of 13,214 votes in 2011.

A former vice chairman of the Aluva municipality, Mr. Salim is the area committee secretary of the CPI(M). Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which opened its account for the first time in the Aluva municipality in the local body elections in November, has fielded Latha Gangadharan, its district secretary. She is also chairperson of the standing committee for welfare in the Chengamanad grama panchayat.
