Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan has called for green construction technologies to ensure to make the homes environment-friendly and cost effective.
Inaugurating a seminar on green housing technologies, organised by the Kerala State Housing Board (KSHB) as part of the M. N. Govindan Nair Birth Centenary celebrations, the Chief Minister pointed out that it was ‘MN’ who laid the foundation for the mass house construction initiative in Kerala which helped several thousands have a roof of their heads. The present government could go in for the EMS Total Housing Project and MN One Lakh Houses Renovation Project only on account of the contributions made by Govindan Nair, he said.
Chairing the function, Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran pointed out that the One Lakh Houses Scheme had won praise from global bodies and created a model for many countries. Offering felicitations, Revenue Minister K. P. Rajendran recalled that leaders like Govindan Nair were rare combinations of revolutionary zeal and administrative skill.
Delivering the key note lecture, State Planning Board Vice-Chairman Prabhat Patnaik said that the alternative trajectory of development that the first Communist government in Kerala introduced when Govindan Nair was the secretary of the unidivided Communist Party laid the foundation for what later came to be known as the ‘Kerala Model’ of development.
