UDF, LDF candidates submit nominations

The candidates of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) for the November 7 by-polls submitted their nominations to Revenue Divisional Officer K.P. Mohandas Pillai here on Monday.

The LDF’s candidate, G. Krishnaprasad of the Communist Party of India (CPI) was the first to arrive at the RDO Office near the District Court at 9.45 a.m. However, with the RDO pointing out that nominations could be received only from 11 a.m. onwards, Mr. Krishnaprasad, who arrived at the office leading a procession of Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran, CPI(M) district secretary C.B. Chandrababu, CPI district secretary A. Shivarajan, Punnapra-Vayalar Revolt veteran P.K. Chandranandan, C.K. Sadashivan, P. Thilothaman and A.M. Arif, MLAs, C.S. Sujatha, former MP, Municipal Chairman P.P. Chitharanjan and others, had to wait for over an hour. Finally, at 11 a.m., he submitted the nomination.

Both the LDF and UDF candidates met for a brief while as the UDF’s A.A. Shukoor arrived at the venue just as Mr. Krishnaprasad was leaving. Mr. Shukoor, accompanied by K.C. Venugopal, MP, UDF district chairman C.R. Jayaprakash, Mahila Congress State chairperson Shanimol Usman, T.N. Prathapan, MLA, and others, submitted his nomination around 12.30 p.m.

Mr. Krishnaprasad, while declaring his assets, stated that he had Rs. 3,485 as cash in his possession, Rs. 5,000 in an SBT account, a Post Office saving of Rs. 28,000, an LIC policy of Rs. 6 lakh, an Enfield Bullet motorbike and a paint selling outlet worth Rs.1.5 lakh, among others. Mr. Shukoor had Rs.15,000 as cash in his possession, a deposit of Rs. 38,757 in the District Cooperative Bank, Rs.30,148 in the Canara Bank, Post Office savings worth Rs.29,000, an Ambassador car worth Rs. 5.85 lakh, a 37-cent plot worth Rs. 37 lakh and a 2,000sft-residence worth Rs.3 lakh, to name a few, as his assets.

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate, K. Babu, who is presently a councillor at the Alappuzha Municipal Council, will submit his nomination on Tuesday while the People’s Democratic Party’s K.A. Hassan will also be submitting his nomination within a couple of days.
