Two youths were washed away in the sea while they were fishing on the shore using a fishing net at Dharmadam, near Thalassery, on Monday.

The marine police here said Surjith, 30, and Manesh, 28, were washed away in the rough sea around 12 noon when they entered the waters to haul the net. Muthu, 25, who joined them for fishing, escaped, the police said.

Local people said the fishermen in the area warned the youths against fishing in the rough sea.

A rescue operation by the Fisheries Department was hampered by inclement weather and the rough sea. A rescue boat of the department was damaged during the operation.
