Statement withdrawal a habit of VS: Kunhalikutty

June 22, 2010 03:19 pm | Updated 03:19 pm IST - MALAPPURAM:

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) State general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty said here on Monday that Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan was in the habit of making statements and withdrawing them later.

Addressing the media at his house, Mr. Kunhalikutty welcomed the Chief Minister's withdrawal of his statement that Christian and Muslim communalism had been on the rise in the State.

“His statement had the potential to spread communal hatred in the State. He withdrew it knowing well that such a tactic would not succeed in Kerala,” Mr. Kunhalikutty said.

The IUML leader said Mr. Achuthanandan had withdrawn his earlier statement that the students of Malappuram passed examinations by copying. “He changed his stand following protests,” Mr. Kunhalikutty said.

The IUML leader said People's Democratic Party (PDP) chairman Abdul Nasir Maudany should not be victimised and punished if he was not guilty of the charges slapped on him. “But if he is guilty, let the law take its course,” he said.

The IUML will not seek the help of the PDP and the Jamaat-e-Islami in the coming local body elections. “But we'll have nothing to do if those parties give us their votes without being asked,” he said.

Mr. Kunhalikutty said it was the Communist Party of India (Marxist) which pampered the Jamaat-e-Islami. “Our party has nothing to do with the Jamaat,” he said.
