The State Cooperative Department’s latest initiative, coming on the heels of the country’s first floating super market, will be to give out loans to poor families to help their girls get married.
The Kerala State Mangalya Sutra Cooperative Department, which will disperse loans at reduced interest rates, will come into being here on January 15. According to officials, the Mangalya Sutra society is intended for girls hailing from poor families who require financial assistance to get married.
“The new initiative is based on Cooperative Minister G. Sudhakaran’s announcement in the State Assembly that the Cooperative Department, as part of making its functioning more people-friendly and public-oriented, would arrange loans for girls from poor families or who have no one else to turn to,” an official release said here on Friday.
The launch of the Mangalya Sutra Cooperative Society will be formally done by Mr. Sudhakaran at the Kalarkode Anjali Auditorium at 10 a.m. next Friday (15th January). A.A. Shukoor will preside over the function.
The launch will be followed by a seminar on various topics.
The seminar will be inaugurated by noted poetess Sugathakumari. As part of publicizing the constitution of the cooperative society, a committee chaired by Ambalapuzha Block panchayat president M. Thyagarajan and Alappuzha Cooperative Societies Joint Registrar (General) P.R. Shivakumar as convener has been constituted.
