Poll expenses of candidates examined

April 02, 2011 08:46 pm | Updated 08:47 pm IST - KOLLAM:

Election expenditure incurred by candidates from five constituencies in the district tallied with the figures noted in the shadow register maintained by the Election Commission during inspection on Saturday.

The candidates who submitted their election expenditure register are for the constituencies of Kunnathur, Kottarakara, Chadayamangalam, Pathanapuram and Punalur.

However, three candidates for Kunnathur, two for Kottarakara, four for Chadayamangalam, two for Pathanapuram and three for Punalur did not submit their election expenditure register.

District Collector S. Lalithambika, who is also the District Election Officer, said the respective returning officers had been directed to issue show-cause notice to the candidates who did not submit the expenditure registers.

The shadow register maintained by the Election Commission will note down the election expenditure of the candidates. The candidates at the same time have to maintain their own expenditure register.

The register of the candidates should be submitted for inspection on three occasions, either directly by the candidates or through their authorised agents.

On Sunday, the candidates for Kollam, Eravipuram, Kundara, Karunagapally, Chavara and Chathannur will have to submit their election expenditure register for inspection.

The second and third expenditure register inspection dates for the candidates for Kunnathur, Kottarakara, Chadayamangalam, Pathanapuram and Punalur will be April 6 and 10 and for Kollam, Eravipuram, Kundara, Karunagapally, Chavara and Chathannur, it will be April 7 and 11, it was informed.

The Election Commission has adopted seven methods to monitor the election expenditure for the shadow register.
