Over 3 lakh saplings to be distributed under Haritha Keralam project

May 31, 2010 07:48 pm | Updated 07:48 pm IST - KATTAPPANA:

As part of the Haritha Keralam project, the Social Forestry division has started supplying 3,40,000 tree saplings free of cost to college and school students and grama panchayats in the district. For service, non-governmental, youth and political organisations, saplings are distributed at 50 paise each.

Social Forestry Peerumade range officer V.A. Mohan said that the project, which began last year, received good response from the school and college authorities, where the 'Ente Maram' (My Tree) and 'Nammude Maram' (Our Tree) projects respectively were launched for popularising the planting of tree saplings. In schools and colleges, monitoring committees are formed to protect the saplings.

He said that the tree saplings were grown at the Social Forestry division's nurseries at Kattamudy, Devikulam, Vellapara, Chellarkovil, Kudayathur, Narupara, Mankulam and Marayur.

Under the 'Vazhiyora Maram' (Roadside Tree) scheme, the division will monitor the protection of trees with the participation of the people in the area. The Social Forestry division has four ranges, Kattappana, Munnar, Thodupuzha and Peerumade, to involve in the implementation of the Haritha Keralam project.

Mr. Mohan said that along with the planting of saplings, measures had also been taken to protect the existing trees in the public places.
