NSS condemns bid to politicise Endosulfan issue

April 27, 2011 08:55 pm | Updated 08:55 pm IST - KOTTAYAM:

The Nair Service Society (NSS) has come down heavily on the attempts by certain quarters to politicise the Endosulfan issue in the State.

In a statement here on Wednesday, NSS general secretary P.K. Narayana Panicker and secretary G. Sukumaran Nair said what was being enacted in the name of a fight against Endosulfan was an ‘‘absurd drama'' to make political capital.

In 2001 and 2004, the government had banned the sale and use of Endosulfan in the State after court directives. However, the present government had totally failed to enforce the ban.

The government had not only failed to stop the production and use of the pesticide, but also did not extend financial assistance to the victims, they said.

The leaders criticised the stance taken by the Centre at the conference of parties to the Stockholm Convention meet in Geneva.

The meeting also expressed condolences at the demise of Sri Satya Sai Baba.
