Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy on Thursday demanded stern action against the policemen who were responsible for leading the attack on innocent people, including women, in Kilanoor during an agitation against the move for survey of land related to road expansion.

In a statement here, Mr. Chandy said those behind the attack were living in a fool's paradise if they thoughtthey could suppress popular agitations. The police action was a blot on the democratic history of the State, he said.

Janata Dal(S) leader Varughese George said it was unfortunate that the police action took place the very next day of the all-party delegation's meeting with the Prime Minister seeking his intervention against eviction of families to make way for the development of the National Highways. He criticised the State government's policy of extending all support to industrial investors ignoring the sentiments of the local people.
