Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said here on Friday that the law and order situation in the State had improved in 2009.

In a message to the police personnel on New Year Day, the Home Minister said the number of political and quotation murders had come down from 393 in 2006 to 325 last year. The rate of murder had dropped to below one per lakh population and this was the lowest in the history of Kerala. Road accidents too had come down despite increase in the number of vehicles at 10 per cent a year. Better enforcement and programmes to create awareness about road safety had helped.
