Upbeat about the success of the experimental cultivation of rice in the ‘kaipad’ areas in the basin of the Kattampally river here that have been left fallow for more than four decades, farmers who have rallied for reviving the paddy fields here have demanded permanent opening of the Kattampally irrigation project shutters.

Emboldened by the success of the trial cultivation in the kaipad areas (those influenced by tidal action) as part of restoring 200 hectares in the basin that once used to be paddy fields growing traditional salt-resistant rice varieties, the ‘kaipad’ farmers are now demanding that the shutters of the project be permanently re-opened to allow tidal action upstream that they think is essential for expanding rice cultivation in the kaipad areas in the next season.

Representatives of various farmers’ organisations who visited the freshly cultivated kaipad areas here on Saturday signed the memorandum to the government exuding the hope that more kaipad areas could be brought under paddy cultivation next year.
