Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan has said that 35 lakh families will be included in the Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CHIS) in 2010-11.
The scheme is being implemented under the Rashtriya Swastya Bima Yojana (RSBY) with the Centre and the State bearing 75 and 25 per cent of the cost respectively.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, he said the beneficiaries would be enrolled in two phases. In the first phase, existing health insurance cards would be renewed. Also BPL members who could not join the scheme last year would be enrolled.
In the second phase, workers in the farm, coir, handloom, beedi, khadi and plantation workers, anganwadi employees, barbers, beauticians, tailors and beneficiaries of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme who complete 50 days of work each would be enrolled.
Under the CHIS, five of a family would get health insurance cover of Rs.30,000. The State government would provide Rs.70,000 each for treatment of those suffering from cancer, heart and renal ailments.
The premium for BPL families is Rs.30 each. APL families should pay Rs.464 each. The insurance cover includes transportation changes too. In the event of the death of the head of a family, the insurance company
would provide Rs.50,000. Those suffering from severe burns too would be given medical assistance of Rs.50,000 each.
The benefits of the scheme would be available at all Government Medical College Hospitals, 165 hospitals in the private sector and 134 government hospitals.
The president of the panchayat that enrols the highest number of people in the scheme would be given a prize of Rs.10,000. A panchayat member who enrols the highest number of people would get a prize of Rs.5,000.
In 2009-2010, 11.78 lakh families joined the scheme. As many as 1.51 lakh families received benefits.
