Six Excise officials were injured after being attacked during a raid on an illicit arrack brewing centre in Cherthala here late last night.

According to Excise officials, the team had raided the residence of one Ramachandran following complaints and tip-offs that the house was being used for brewing arrack. However, as the Excise team attempted to arrest six persons who were allegedly consuming the illicit brew, the team was attacked, allegedly by Ramachandran and a couple of his relatives.

The six persons, whom the team attempted to arrest, too joined in the attack and damaged the cans of arrack that was seized by the team. The Cherthala police arrived by then and shifted the injured Excise officials to the Cherthala Taluk Hospital.

While the six persons escaped, Ramachandran and his relatives were admitted at the hospital, alleging that they were tortured by the Excise team. The Cherthala police have registered a case and are investigating.
