Community policing would be extended to 100 more stations in Kerala this year as the police-citizen collaboration has helped control crime, according to State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.
“Wherever the project was implemented on a pilot basis, it has proved a success in bringing down the crime rate,” he told the Assembly during question hour.
Kerala’s community police “Janamaithri” has been implemented in about 50 police stations since its launch in 2008.
The concept involves enlisting of participation of citizenry in tackling crimes in the respective area.
Specially trained inspectors and constables are designated as community police personnel in each locality. They keep in constant touch with members of the local community and their suggestions and help are sought to tackle crimes.
